The Chlorate Destruction Pump serves the purpose of recirculating acidified anolyte within the Chlorate Destruction Tank 008-T-02 through heat exchanger 008-E-01. Its primary function is to uphold the tank’s temperature and ensure adequate mixing within the system. Notably, a standby pump isn’t deemed necessary as the chlorate destruction system can operate without continuous operation.
The recirculation rate through the Chlorate Destruction Pump is determined by heat and mass balance considerations. This flow rate is calibrated to sustain the Chlorate Destruction Tank at 90ºC during standard operation, achieved by heating the recirculated anolyte to approximately ~95ºC. The typical pH level of the anolyte at this stage is less than 1. IES has incorporated a 10% design margin into the pump design, and additional margin adjustments may be made by others if necessary.
Pump capacity is determined by the heat and mass balance figures. Detailed design phases should include a review of system pressure drops. The reheated anolyte is reintroduced to the Chlorate Destruction Tank via a jet mixer. A pressure drop of 0.5 bar has been accounted for in the heat exchanger design.
