History of PV Ribbon Development

2BB-3BB Phase

  1. Interconnect Ribbon
    • Primarily made from rolled copper strips, processed using a 48-head slow tinning machine at a speed of 10-15 meters per minute. The tinned copper strips are rolled into coils and cut into final product dimensions. Specifications range from 2.0 x 0.2 mm to 1.5 x 0.16 mm.
  2. Busbar Ribbon
    • Produced by slitting copper strips and processing them with a slow tinning machine (10-15 meters per minute), then coiled and cut to the final dimensions. Specifications range from 8.0 x 0.25 mm to 4.0 x 0.15 mm.
  3. Module End Welding
    • Primarily done manually, which limited production speed and consistency.

4BB-5BB Phase

  1. Interconnect Ribbon
    • Transitioned from slow to fast tinning with speeds of 90-120 meters per minute. Initially, the copper strip was rolled and tinned in two separate steps, later combined into a single rolling and tinning process. Reflective interconnect ribbons were also introduced.
  2. Busbar Ribbon
    • Advanced to fast tinning with speeds of 40-60 meters per minute.
  3. Product Packaging
    • Finished ribbons were primarily packaged in spools.
  4. Module End Welding
    • Automated welding became the primary method, increasing production efficiency.

9BB-12BB Phase

  1. Interconnect Ribbon
    • Evolved into round ribbons with specifications between 0.30-0.40 mm, providing enhanced flexibility and lower resistance.
  2. Busbar Ribbon
    • Transitioned to integrated rolling and tinning processes.
  3. Product Packaging
    • Continued to be packaged in spools.

Current Phase

  1. MBB (Multi-Busbar) Round Wire Ribbon
    • Includes standard round wire ribbons (0.29-0.32 mm) and low-temperature round wire ribbons, designed for improved compatibility with modern PV module designs.
  2. Reflective Busbar Ribbons
    • Available in white or black reflective versions to enhance light absorption and module efficiency.
  3. MBB Shaped Ribbons
    • Includes unique shapes like round-flat and round-triangle ribbons for specialized applications.
  4. Black Ribbon
    • Black interconnect and busbar ribbons are available, which are designed for aesthetic integration in PV modules, particularly in rooftop installations.

The development of PV ribbon technology has progressed alongside the continuous optimization and maturation of equipment and processes. As an equipment manufacturer, we have witnessed and validated significant changes in photovoltaic ribbon technology and equipment over the past decade. With the rising market demands for efficiency and product quality, our busbar equipment has evolved from basic interconnected strips to multi-busbar designs. We continuously upgrade our equipment, integrating intelligent controls and advanced welding processes to ensure that we meet the specific performance requirements of modern photovoltaic modules while maintaining high production rates. These technological advancements have not only improved production efficiency but also enhanced product consistency and stability, showcasing our vital contributions to the industry’s development. Looking ahead, we remain committed to the innovation and application of PV ribbon technology.
